How to Tell Your Story in Network Marketing
Are you wondering how to tell your story and how to share your message to attract people to your network marketing business?
I get a lot of people who come to me and tell me that they don’t have a story to tell yet because they haven’t had success in their side business.
And that’s simply not true.
Everyone has a story. It may not be this big and awe-inspiring story where you went from rags to riches. Not everyone in Network Marketing has that kind of story, especially not when they are starting out. But you do have a story and here are five steps to sharing your story.
How to Craft a POWERFUL Story in network marketing
1. Develop a “tag line.”
This should summarize your background story that makes you seem human. For example, “I’m just a bearded man from a small town, who was sick and tired of seeing my kids mostly at work in a photo on my desk instead of the real thing.”
Understand that people are thinking, “I’m on a journey, can you be my guide?” so it’s your job to show them that you’re nothing special. You’re someone who wasn’t satisfied with a certain area of your life, you decided to make a change, and you got to work. Right?
2. Start where they can relate to you.
If you’ve had success in network marketing, it’s important for you to let go of your ego and eat a slice of “humble pie.”
You want people to be inspired and empowered by your story, leaving them thinking, “if he can do it, so can I.”
Talk about the things you didn’t like about your background. What in your life was holding you back? What were your challenges and dreams? How did you come to learn of Network Marketing? And what finally convinced you to join? Think about all of the reasons why you were drawn to Network Marketing.
3. Tug at their hearts.
A good marketer isn’t the one who can sell ice to an eskimo. A good marketer is great at story-telling and connecting to people on an emotionally level. It’s totally okay to be emotional when you’re telling your story and that’s where people connect and see how human you are.
I’m not saying you have to cry your face off on camera or on stage. However, you can pause for a second, put your head down, and have your hand on your chest to show people through your body language that this was a tough part of your life and you turned to Network Marketing as the vehicle to get your to where you are today.
4. End on a high note.
Your story should start at a low, bringing people through the up’s and down’s of your journey, and finally to where you’re at now and how you feel about your future.
It’s important for you to make the distinction when storytelling that your life changed because you tried and you got started immediately. You didn’t sit back and contemplate whether or not you’d be successful. You didn’t question whether you should start a blog or learn everything about the business, the company, or the product first…you simply plugged in and got to work.
I would suggest converting your money story into your lifestyle story. After all, why would someone who is already earning $10,000 per month want to join your business? Because of the lifestyle!
Not fighting the traffic is lifestyle.
Being home with your kids is lifestyle.
Doing work that brings you satisfaction is lifestyle.
Waking up after you’re finished sleeping is lifestyle.
Instead of earning $500 in your home-based business, ask yourself “What am I doing with the $500?” And if your answer is that you are buying back some of your life—for example, the ability to retire at 55 instead of retiring at 65—that’s lifestyle!
What sounds more impressive? “I earn $700 per month in my home-based business…” or “With the extra money our business provides, we were able to take another two-week dream vacation in the middle of February to Aruba!”
5. Closing your story.
At the end of telling your story and background in Network Marketing, close by making them feel that they can turn it around if they can believe in themselves and plug in too.
A great phrase you can use is, “If anything, what if this turned out only half as good as it did for me and my family, as it would for you?”
It will take work, drive and ambition, but at the end of the day…if a bearded man from a small town, who was sick and tired of seeing his kids mostly at work in a photo on his desk instead of the real thing, can be successful in Network Marketing, why can’t you?
I wish you all the success in the world!
